GreenEdge Kids Goes "Carbon Neutral"

Native Energy Provides Carbon Offsets for 100% of GreenEdge Estimated Business Operation, Including Shipping

SOLANA BEACH, CA (May 21, 2008) GreenEdge Kids, an online retailer of trendy children’s eco-fashion, is now purchasing carbon offsets from Native Energy to offset 100% of GreenEdge Kids’ estimated energy consumption.

Global warming occurs as a result of energy from the sun being trapped by gases in the atmosphere, primarily CO2 and methane. Normally, the natural presence of some heat-trapping gases in the Earth's atmosphere allows life to flourish by insulating us from the absolute cold of space. Carbon dioxide, methane, and other "greenhouse gases" are released and absorbed naturally in what is known as the carbon cycle, which plays a central role in the maintenance of life on the planet.

Ice core data from Antarctica provides a pulse-like record of increases and decreases of gases and temperature over hundreds of thousands of years, influenced by the sun, Earth's orbit, volcanism, and many other things. What is clear from this record is that the Earth's temperature and atmospheric carbon are linked: when one is high, so is the other.

Since the Industrial Revolution - in about the last 150 years - humans have changed this natural pulse. We have done this primarily by digging up long-buried carbon in the form of coal, then oil and natural gas, and burning these "fossil fuels" - thus releasing this eons-old carbon into the atmosphere. Also, as our population has increased, methane from waste and agriculture has increased dramatically. The result is that we have increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere to the point where we are warming the globe and causing our climate to change.

Carbon offsets are a mechanism to accommodate the fact that for now, there are practical limits to how much each of us can reduce our own energy use. To make up for the CO2 emissions we can't avoid, we can instead help construct new renewable energy projects, such that other CO2 emissions can be reduced. Native Energy finances construction of new sources of clean and renewable electricity, like wind power and farm methane recovery, and their emissions reductions compensate for the CO2 pollution created by businesses like GreenEdge Kids. Offsetting isn't an excuse to pollute, but rather a way to take responsibility for pollution we can't avoid.

Native Energy estimated the quantity of carbon offsets based on the energy use described and approximated by GreenEdge Kids. Although there is really no such thing as carbon neutral, because nearly all businesses contribute to global warming pollution in some way, Native Energy and carbon offsets allow us to do our part.

GreenEdge Kids has a deep commitment to environment, not just in the level of sustainability in the clothing it sells, but in all of its business practices. GreenEdge Kids already reduces its consumption of resources wherever possible, choosing to reuse and use less at every opportunity, be it paper at the printer, boxes and packing materials, or energy. Recycled paper, hemp paper, and soy inks are used exclusively for office products – even the checks! Purchasing carbon offsets from Native Energy to create a net zero climate impact is yet another step toward making GreenEdge Kids truly green, from the inside out.

“This purchase of carbon offsets from Native Energy demonstrates our dedication to environmental consciousness in every aspect of our eco-friendly clothing business, including doing our part to reduce global warming pollution," says Annie Kaskade, Founder and President of GreenEdge Kids. "We selected Native Energy for carbon offsets because we were looking for a reputable and reliable organization that shares our vision in making a difference."

About Native Energy

Native Energy, endorsed by Co-op America, has a unique "help build" carbon offset program that allows businesses to have a direct impact in helping finance the construction of specific new renewable energy projects that need additional upfront revenues to succeed. Native Energy helps build projects that create sustainable economic benefits for Native Americans, Alaska Native Villages, family farmers and rural communities. By purchasing a share of a project's long-term offsets, businesses help fix a market failure that is preventing the development of many high-quality renewable energy projects. Native Energy also offers conventional vintage renewable energy credits (RECs) and vintage carbon offsets from operating new projects, which help build overall market demand for clean energy and other carbon mitigating projects.

GreenEdge Kids is now among many of the world's best known environmentally and socially responsible businesses, organizations, bands, films and events that have chosen Native Energy, and who want their purchases to have a direct impact in financing new projects. Other Native Energy Participants
